Step 1: In order to assess your knowledge and prepare you for the exam (FoodGuard® Texas Certification Examination) you must take the assessment (ServSafe® Manager Online Assessment).

Step 2: You will be offered the opportunity to take an online preparatory course (ServSafe Manager Certification Training Online Course) to prepare you for the examination. Taking the prepatory course is not mandatory—you may take the exam without taking the online course.

Step 3: Take the FoodGuard Texas Certification Examination.

Costs
Each of these three steps toward certification require payment by credit card (VISA, MasterCard, or Discover). Payment is required prior to beginning each part. Each fee is nonrefundable.

Assessment: $25, or free with an assessment card.  Call 800-395-2872 to get your free code.

Online Course: $75

Exam: $35

Discount: For those who purchase the assessment, a $15 discount will be applied to either the online course or exam, whichever is purchased first. If for some reason you do not pass the exam the first time, you must retake both the assessment and the exam and will be charged for both, minus the $15 discount.

IMPORTANT NOTE
If you are purchasing either the online course or exam for someone other than yourself, you will need to instruct that person to change the first and last name fields by clicking “Account Info” after they have logged in. This must be done so that the correct name displays on the FoodGuard Certificate.

Getting Started
Click “New User,” then enter your name, address and email information, and choose a password. Please be sure to spell your name correctly, as this is the name that will appear on your certificate. You may correct mistakes at any time prior to taking the exam by clicking “Account Info.”

You will be asked to enter credit card information to purchase the ServSafe Manager Online Assessment for $25. See Costs for more information.

Part 1: Assessment
ServSafe® Manager Online Assessment
Taking the 42-question ServSafe Manager Online Assessment will determine if you need to take a preparatory course prior to the FoodGuard Texas Certification Examination. The assessment will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Part 2: Online Course
ServSafe® Manager Certification Training Online Course
The ServSafe Manager Certification Training online course will prepare you for the FoodGuard Texas Certification Examination. The course will take approximately 8-10 hours to complete. You may leave the course and resume at any time by logging into the site again.

When you finish the course you will take a post-test where you will assess your knowledge and identify topics that need further review. This test is for practice only and does not provide licensing or certification. You will still need to take the FoodGuard Texas Certification examination in order to become a certified foodhandler in the state of Texas. For national certification, you may take the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Examination at a proctored site near you.

Part 3: Exam
FoodGuard® Texas Certification Examination
You will have 90 minutes to complete the FoodGuard Texas Certification Examination. You must complete the test in one session, so make sure you use a computer that will enable you to be connected to the Internet for the full 90 minutes. The exam consists of 75 questions with an additional 10 personal questions throughout the exam for security purposes. You will need to answer all of the security questions correctly in order for your test to be valid.

Seventy five percent or higher is a passing score on the exam. If you pass the exam, you will be able to print a certificate. If you receive a score lower than a 75%, you will not receive a certificate. You must retake the exam and pass to become certified. You must pay for both the assessment and exam each time you retake the exam, for a cost of $45 each attempt.  The FoodGuard Certification is valid in the State of Texas for 5 years from the date it is issued. However-you will need to check with your local health authority to see how often they want the certification renewed-the local authority can require more frequent certification.
